SYLVIA WALLE, former executive chairman of Holiday Africa and a doyenne of the SA tourism industry, passed away on July 29 at her family home outside Plettenberg Bay after a long battle with cancer.

Her courage in the face of adversity, her professionalism, astuteness and ethics were admired and respected by all who knew her, said a spokesperson for the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA).

Under her leadership, Holiday Africa received the State President's Award for Export Achievement in 1992 - the only tourism services organisation to have received this award to date.

Gavin Simpson, executive chairman of Holiday Holdings, which owned Holiday Africa until 1996 when the company was bought by Tourvest, said: "Sylvia was a leader of rare quality who touched my life and those of the people who worked with her." Tourvest ceo, Steve Griessel, added: "She added tremendous value in many ways, as a member of the group, as a friend and as a trusted colleague. She will indeed be missed by all who have known and worked with her."
